Windows 7 security everyone
Windows 7 Security. Sign in to vote. We've got a Windows file server that hosts domain admin user directories. They also have full security rights to the folder. Domain Admin is the folder owner. Same exact location, same rights, only difference is how they are accessing it. If we blow away their user directory and let it recreate on the users next login, sometimes they have access to create New, sometimes not. There's no consistency. I need help to see if someone can tell me how to restore settings to default.
This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread. I have the same question Report abuse. Details required :. Then I clicked "OK" or "Apply". The machine ground around for a while as it went through all the subfolders and files on the drive. Watch each screen for a little tickbox which applies your changes to all subfolders and files.
If you see one, be sure to select it. Note: I went back to "Effective Permissions" again to write this post but found it empty again. Since the Samsung Win7 computer obviously made some changes after I used "Effective Permissions" to give "Full Control" to "Everyone", I'm guessing that window just resets itself to clear each time after someone uses it. But I think the "Effective Permissions" changes were still there.
I should also note that there is an "Owner" tab in the same window that has the "Effective Permissions" tab. I use only one account with full Administrator privileges.
Then drop down to the bottom of the list and un-check "Simple File Sharing". I don't know if this change is necessary, but it's part of what other people suggested and what I did. And now the Win7 drives are mapped and working on my XP machine.
I guess I'll go back later and try to figure out which parts of what I did were actually necessary and which parts weren't. I also applied the same changes to the "Documents and Settings" folder of the Win7 machine. Now I have full access to them, too, from my XP machine. I've gone through and changed most of them so that now ownership belongs to my main User account. I didn't delete the "TrustedInstaller" user, though. It's part of the automatic update process. If you delete it, automatic updates probably won't work right.
One to change ownership to you and one to undo the change. I hope my small additional post is helpful. If you have an issue getting from a Windows 7 box to a Windows XP box, and if you are running Norton on the Windows XP box, and if you are using the firewall of Norton on the Windows XP box, and you followed all of the steps above, then turn off the Norton firewall for 15 minutes to see if the firewall is the issue.
You can turn off the Norton firewall on the Windows XP box temporarily by right clicking on the Norton tray icon and clicking on Disable Smart Firewall. If your access to your Windows XP share from your Windows 7 box works immediately, then you can turn back on the firewall and proceed to follow the instructions here because you have found the issue.
If this is not your issue, the rest of this posting does not apply. Bring up Norton by double clicking on the tray icon. Click on PC Security, the panel on the far left. Click on Manage Firewall. A new dialog box appears called Settings. Click on the Traffic Rules tab. This activates a button below called Modify. Click on this Modify button. A Modify Rule dialog appears. Pick the radio group for Allow. Click Ok to set the setting and close the Modify Rule dialog box.
Click on this option and set this to Allow just as you did in the prior paragraph. Windows 7 behaves like Windows for file sharing. Click the Apply button from the Setting dialog. Your Windows 7 box should immediately be able to access your shared folder on your Windows XP box. Thank you! I couldnt figure out how, and was stuck on the problem for a good hour before finding this.

I finally got it figured out. I am now fully connected with all 3 computers communicating with each other, That took redoing the work group names on the other computers twice each to straighten it out. This is because Win7 doesnt accept the driver for that printer even in compatibility mode.
The Printer is seen by Win7 and Identified correctly but can't print on it because of the driver. Printer sharing from the Win 7 Machine was fixed in Devices and Printers. Highlight the printer to share then right click that printer at the bottom of the window and you get the menu choice for sharing it. Simple as that. THe P will be different unless I can find a work around for it. THen again it was rescued from the trash bin so it wouldnt be too much of a problem just to say bye bye to it and get a newer photo printer.
Thank you for your help and I have saved your set of directions to share with a friend who is having similar Networking problems.
Tuesday, March 3, AM. Thanks for this post. I struggled with adding my W7 PC to my network for hours, and with getting folders shared between this and my XP machine. This post sorted it all out for me. Friday, March 20, PM. Thanks for your post. I use networking since win98, but here I can't find anything Now, thanks to your post, I can share files and folders, but I still cannot share the Internet connection. The null "default gateway" means I can't connect to internet on tis PC.
How can I do this on W7? Sorry for my bad english. Saturday, March 21, PM. Hi there. Forgive me, but I am quite literally going nuts here. I have followed the instructions for making windows 7 work with XP SP3 and it doesn't work. Everything on 7 is set for the wonderful little dummed down network settings so it will work with XP. I even have all the folders access set for Everyone as you said.
No matter what I do, I cannot get the two computers to network. Yet, when they both had 7 on them, they networked beautifully. It's the same hardware as when I had 7 on the second computer which now has XP, but it doesn't network between the two computers. I can get on the 'net just fine from both, but tat is as far as this goes. If it helps any, I am using a cable modem with an external DNS server and if I override then I lose my internet connection.
Saturday, October 31, AM. DrGerry If you have a The system generates these APIPA addresses to allow local networking but the addresses are not routable. They do not give you a default gateway. How does your network connect to the Internet? Do you have a router which includes a DHCP server? I have the two computers which connect to a switch and the switch connects to the cable modem and then on out to the internet.
Nothing special no routers, none of that over-hyped jazz. Sorry, used a router a few times and can't stand 'em. Too much work. Saturday, October 31, PM. Why would workgroup name need to be the same on 2 PCs for file sharing to work? Is this a W7 restriction although I sincerely doubt , because in XP you could have browsed files on network PC that was part of different workgroup.?
Sunday, November 1, AM. I'm having a bit of a problem. My Win 7 machine has 2 drives. But when I try and access drive C I get 'Access is denied' message.
